When the 2010 Small Game Hunting brochure hits the stands in early August, it is sure to raise a few eyebrows. In addition to a fresh new design that simplifies the rules and regulations, the brochure will include a free DVD titled, “Pheasant Hunting Colorado.”

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is breaking new ground for a state wildlife agency, hoping the DVD will inspire new hunters to discover the many facets of Colorado’s excellent upland bird hunting, beginning with the ring-necked pheasant.
Although “Pheasant Hunting Colorado” is an entertaining, action-packed DVD filmed in stunning high-definition on Colorado’s Eastern Plains, it offers the viewer much more than just a taste of exciting pheasant hunting. The half-hour DVD is a comprehensive guide that leads both new and experienced hunters alike through the steps of planning and pulling off a successful hunt.

“The section on identifying the various types of pheasant habitats and how they can determine a pheasant’s daily movements is easy to understand and goes way beyond the typical advice given to hunters,” said Dennis McKinney, video specialist for the DOW and long-time pheasant hunter in eastern Colorado. “And the scouting and hunting strategies are dead on.”

More good news for small-game hunters this year is the Division of Wildlife’s decision to make its Walk-In-Access Program free to small-game license holders. The popular program provides access to more than 220,000 acres of private land to small game and waterfowl hunters. Hunters will find more details in the Small Game Brochure and in the Walk-In-Access Atlas due out later this fall.

“Teaching and recruiting future hunters is an effort that all wildlife agencies across the country are working on,” said Tyler Baskfield, communications manager for the DOW. “Providing an entertaining and educational DVD with every small game regulation brochure allows us to recruit pheasant hunters on a mass scale. It dovetails with our other recruiting efforts and the state’s wildlife and economy will benefit in the long run.”

Hunting and fishing bring an estimated $1.8 billion dollars into Colorado’s economy, and sportsmen pay for the majority of wildlife management. Money from the sale of hunting and fishing licenses accounts for more than 70 percent of the DOW’s annual budget. Pheasant hunting specifically benefits the many small-town economies on the Eastern Plains.

“Pheasant hunting is a great way to introduce new and especially young hunters to the sport of hunting,” said Tom Remington, Director of the DOW and avid pheasant hunter. “With this DVD, a pair of boots and the Walk-In Program Atlas, anybody can try their hand at hunting what looks to be a plentiful crop of roosters this fall.”

Pheasant hunters enjoyed great success last year due to increased numbers of birds on Colorado’s Eastern Plains. Pheasant crow counts on the Eastern Plains this spring were up over last year by 27 percent. Barring any massive weather events or other impacts on the pheasant population between now and the opening day of pheasant season, hunters should enjoy a banner year for pheasants.

“There was no cobra in Cleopatra’s death,” Schäfer told Discovery News.

The author of a best-selling book in Germany, “Cleopatra,” Schäfer searched historic writings for evidence to disprove the 2,000-year-old asp legend. His findings are to be featured on the German channel ZDF as part of a program on Cleopatra.

“The Roman historian Cassius Dio, writing about 200 years after Cleopatra’s demise, stated that she died a quiet and pain-free death, which is not compatible with a cobra bite. Indeed, the snake’s venom would have caused a painful and disfiguring death,” Schäfer said.

According to German toxicologist Dietrich Mebs, a poison specialist taking part in the study, the symptoms occurring after an asp bite are very unpleasant, and include vomiting, diarrhea and respiratory failure.

“Death may occur within 45 minutes, but it may also be longer with painful edema at the bite site. At the end, the dead body does not look very nice with vomit, diarrhea, a swollen bite site,” Mebs told Discovery News.

Last January, Dan Bell and Bell Wildlife Specialties hosted a goose hunt for a bunch of Kansas kids. STEP OUTSIDE TV came along and caught all of the fun to share with you. You can watch the show this week on Outdoor Channel at the following times:

All times are EDT.

Dan Bell is definitely one of the “Good Guys”. Dan got involved with Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors the very first year we started hunting with kids, back in 2002. Dan offered to host a youth turkey hunt in the spring of ’03 and has done so every year since. Over 150 kids have experienced their first turkey hunt with Dan. We’ve got some amazing videos of some of these hunts on the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors website.

Dan has also hosted antlerless deer hunts and as shown in the video, goose hunts for the kids as well.

Check out the Bell Wildlife Specialties website here.

And if you have some time to watch some kids get their first turkeys, check out these links:

50 Years of 50 Stars

(Maryland) — Fort McHenry is world-famous as the birthplace of “The Star-Spangled Banner,” written by Francis Scott Key about the fort’s 15-star, 15-stripe flag. Even today’s 50-star flag, however, had its moment of fame at Fort McHenry. Fifty years ago, on July 4, 1960, the very first 50-star flag was raised “o’er the ramparts” of Fort McHenry before it flew anywhere else in the country. On July 4, 2010, come celebrate a Hawaiian Fourth of July at Fort McHenry. At noon, a ceremony begins with the hoisting of a huge 20-by-38-foot, 50-star flag in a reenactment of the 1960 moment. The Aloha Boys will perform traditional Hawaiian music, while the flags of all 50 states line the fort’s ramparts. At 2 p.m., a music program entitled “From Patapsco to Pacific” will highlight both the fifes and drums of 1814 and traditional Hawaiian music. The Hawaiian Fourth of July comes to a close at 4 p.m. Visitors are welcome to help rangers lower the giant flag. For more information, please contact Vince Vaise or Jim Bailey at 410-962-4290.

Families can enjoy a traditional Independence Day celebration at St. Paul’s Church National Historic Site on July 4 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day’s events include music, a reading of the Declaration of Independence, the tolling of the church’s 250-year-old bell 13 times, speeches, and light refreshments.
Yosemite Scientists to Use Lichen to Study Air Quality

(California) — Scientists at Yosemite National Park will use lichen diversity to measure impacts on air quality. Scientists will research how lichen serves as an indicator of nitrogen deposition, which varies over areas of the park. Most pollution that causes high ozone concentrations contains or ends up containing nitrogen after it reacts with sunlight in the atmosphere. Measurements suggest that the deposition of nitrogen from the atmosphere to the Sierra Nevada, especially in the fragile high elevations, is up to five times higher than it was in the 19th century.

Last Dam Summer

(Washington) — The largest dam removal in U.S. history will begin next year in the Elwha Valley of Olympic National Park. The project will free the Elwha River after 100 years. Salmon populations will swell as all five species of Pacific salmon return to more than 70 miles of river and streamand to a still-wild ecosystem. The return of fish will draw back bears, eagles, and other animals, while removing the dams will reestablish the natural flow of sediment from the mountains to the coast. The movement of sediment will rebuild wetlands, beaches, and the estuary at the mouth of the Elwha River. The returning salmon and restored river will renew the culture of the Lower Elwha Klallam Tribe, whose members have lived along the Elwha River since time immemorial. Tribal members will have access to sacred sites that are now inundated, and cultural traditions can be reborn.

The National Park Service and the tribe are primary partners on the dam removal. For more information, please contact Barb Maynes at 360-565-3005.

$3 million for WWII Japanese American Confinement Sites

National Park Service Grants Fund Preservation Efforts

Washington — The National Park Service (NPS) has awarded 23 grants totaling

$2.9 million to help preserve and interpret historic locations, where

Japanese Americans were detained during World War II.

In the program’s second year, the Japanese American Confinement Sites

Grants will help fund projects in a dozen states, including the restoration

of a historic railroad depot in Arkansas that will house an exhibit about

that state’s two confinement sites, and an educational outreach program to

engage youth in preserving confinement sites through art, conversation, and

community service.

“The Japanese American internment experience is an important chapter in

American history,” said NPS Director Jon Jarvis. “The National Park

Service is honored to be part of this shared effort to preserve these

sites, which are a tragic reminder of a shameful episode in our past, and a

compelling lesson on the fragility of our constitutional rights.”

The NPS grants range from $17,295 to re-establish the historic Honor Roll

at the Minidoka National Historic Site in Jerome County, ID (which

commemorates Japanese American servicemen from that camp) to $832,879 to

build the interior of the Heart Mountain Interpretive Learning Center in

Park County, WY. Also receiving grants are a project to develop plans to

rebuild a guard tower at the Granada Relocation Center (Amache) in

southeastern Colorado, the relocation and rehabilitation of a historic

barrack from the Colorado River Relocation Center (Poston) in Arizona, and

several oral history projects. Although the matching funds support

preservation and interpretation work in 12 states, some of the projects are

national in scope. These include a plan to create a reference and resource

website that will hold research materials and curricula on the history of

the camps.

Congress established the Japanese American Confinement Sites grant program

in 2006 to preserve and interpret

the places where Japanese Americans were sequestered after Japan attacked

Pearl Harbor. The law authorizes up

to $38 million in grants for the life of the program to identify, research,

evaluate, interpret, protect, restore, repair, and acquire historic

confinement sites. The program aims to teach and inspire present and future

generations about the injustice of the World War II confinement and

demonstrate the nation’s commitment since then to equal justice under the

law.

Congress appropriated $3 million for grants in the current fiscal year.

They were awarded in a competitive process, matching $2 in federal money

for every $1 in non-federal funds and “in-kind” contributions raised by

groups working to preserve the sites and their histories. Congress

appropriated $1 million for fiscal year 2009, the first year of the grants.

Locations eligible for the grants include the 10 War Relocation Authority

camps that were set up in 1942 in seven states: Gila River and Poston, AZ;

Amache, CO; Heart Mountain, WY; Jerome and Rohwer, AR; Manzanar and Tule

Lake, CA; Minidoka, ID, and Topaz, UT. Also eligible are more than 40 other

locations in 16 states, including civilian and military-run assembly,

relocation and isolation centers.

Following are brief descriptions of the funded projects. Those marked with

The Colorado Division of Wildlife is asking people to take precautions when living or recreating in coyote country. From coyote attacks on pets to aggressive coyotes approaching people, the Division is receiving increasing calls about coyote activity.

"Spring is denning season for coyotes and with new pups in the dens, coyotes will behave more aggressively," explained John Broderick, Terrestrial Program Manager for the Division of Wildlife. "When you put defensive coyotes trying to feed their young into the mix with lots of people heading outdoors to enjoy the warming weather, you get the right mix for potential problems."

The DOW wants to caution people about encounters with coyotes. These are not pets. They are wild animals that are predators, and they should be treated with caution and respect.

The coyote (Canis latrans) is a member of the dog family. It resembles a small German shepherd with the exception of the long snout and bushy, black-tipped tail. Coyotes are extremely adaptable and resourceful, and can survive on whatever food is available. They prey on rabbits, mice, birds and other small animals, as well as young deer and sheep. In urban areas, coyotes have attacked people’s small pets – cats and dogs included – particularly when pets are allowed to roam free or left out in yards overnight. A typical coyote weighs about 30 lbs.

Coyote home ranges can include urban areas such as the downtown Denver corridor. From feeding on pets in the urban environment to more natural prey in canyon, sage and forest lands, coyotes are common around the state.

Many urban coyote conflicts often center on feeding issues. When people feed wildlife, it doesn’t take long to teach a wild animal to associate people with food, but it’s very difficult to convince a habituated coyote to return to wild ways. Coyotes that appear friendly may be mimicking behavior that has been rewarded with food in the past: Remember that all wildlife is unpredictable. Do not get close or encourage interaction with wild animals. When it becomes apparent that no food is forthcoming, the coyote’s behavior can change abruptly.

People with pets need to keep them on a leash when walking them. While at home, pets should not be allowed to roam freely. Even pets in enclosed yards run the risk of predation, especially at night. People should also feed their pets inside in an effort to keep pet food from attracting coyotes and other wildlife.

Encounters with aggressive coyotes should be reported to the nearest Colorado Division of Wildlife office.

For more information, get a copy of “Living with Wildlife in Coyote Country” at your local Division of Wildlife office or on the web at http://wildlife.state.co.us/WildlifeSpecies/LivingWithWildlife/Mammals/CoyoteCountry.htm

WASHINGTON – A dramatic quest to pursue an education in the land of

opportunity and to escape civil war in Somalia brought Kawther Elmi to the

United States. Now a National Park Ranger, Elmi shares America’s stories

and her fervent belief in President Lincoln’s vision with visitors to the

Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C.

This week the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services recognized Ranger

Elmi by naming her an Outstanding American by Choice. The tribute

celebrates the accomplishments of naturalized U.S. citizens. Through civic

participation, professional achievement, and responsible citizenship,

recipients have demonstrated their commitment to this country and to the

common civic values that unite us as Americans.

In bestowing the honor, Alejandro Mayorkas, U.S. Citizenship and

Immigration Services Director, said of Elmi, “Her courage to overcome

adversity, her dedication to her studies and to her work, and her belief in

the democratic ideals of this country serve as an inspiration to us all.”

National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis expressed pride in Ranger Elmi.

“Not only does Ranger Elmi set an example by her passion her work, her life

embodies a poignant struggle and determination that exemplifies one of the

very reasons the National Park Service exists – to preserve our nation’s

important places and tell our people’s stories.”

Elmi was born in Ethiopia and raised in Somalia. She was granted political

asylum to live in the United States in 1989. She earned a bachelor of arts

in studio arts at the University of Mary Washington, a bachelor of fine

arts at Virginia Commonwealth University, and a master of fine arts from

the State University of New York, Albany. In 2000, she joined the National

Park Service at Richmond National Battlefield Park and Maggie L. Walker

National Historic Site. Now, as a park ranger at the Lincoln Memorial, she

talks to visitors about Lincoln’s contributions and credits him for the

freedoms and opportunities she has been afforded and that are offered to

all those who are new to the country.

Ranger Elmi accepted the honor during a naturalization ceremony and offered

a challenge to her fellow naturalized citizens, saying to them:

It is our turn to roll up our sleeves and do good work so that future

generations will find an America even more vibrant than today….I

have no doubt we will meet the challenge before us. I am optimistic

about my future and yours, and I relish seeing what life brings

tomorrow. I am fortunate to have found work as a civil servant and

more fortunate still that my agency’s [the National Park Service’s]

core values are very much in line with my own. I wish for all of you

to find meaningful work that not only affords you life’s comforts but

also feeds your mind and spirit.

See a video of Kawther Elmi at

http://www.nps.gov/americasbestidea/video/elmi_kawther.html

The ceremony at the Department of the Interior building (moved from the

Lincoln Memorial because of rain) welcomed 40 new Americans from 23

countries, and continued a great tradition of holding naturalization

ceremonies at national parks – new citizens mean new owners of America’s

most treasured places.

Before the ceremony, the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services and the

National Park Service renewed their partnership to enhance the meaning and

stature of citizenship ceremonies by holding them at national parks

throughout the country.
