Koppenhofer, who with his wife, Susan, owns Special K Reptiles, has had to rely on his hobby to make ends meet for the past six months after losing his job at an insurance company.

Reptile business owners wouldn’t be the only ones hurt, he said.

Companies selling heat lamps, aquariums and rodents used for food also would face an immediate drop in revenue.

“If this forces me out of business, I’ll move out of the state,” said Koppenhofer, 57, of Madison. “I would stay close because I have family here.”

Particularly disturbing to herpers are the comments posted on the article. As a community, we really need to start working harder on education and outreach to the general public. Perceptions of our community must be overcome.

You see people that can’t even feed their kids buying snakes etc. But they also buy beer and cigarettes and haven’t got a decent place to live in. The guy in Pike County that had teh two lions taht got out lives in a single wide falling down trailer and gets welfare and ssi.
There is not reason to own these “exotics” go to the zoo once or twice a year to see them.

Image is everything, whether we want it to be or not. Reach out in a calm, educated fashion to folks who would never consider a snake a pet. Do so in a polite manner. Outreach and public education can be hard, but are critical at this time.

07-21 at 8:00AM | 07-23 at 11:00AM | 07-24 at 5:30PM

All times are EDT.

Dan Bell is definitely one of the “Good Guys”. Dan got involved with Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors the very first year we started hunting with kids, back in 2002. Dan offered to host a youth turkey hunt in the spring of ’03 and has done so every year since. Over 150 kids have experienced their first turkey hunt with Dan. We’ve got some amazing videos of some of these hunts on the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors website.

Dan has also hosted antlerless deer hunts and as shown in the video, goose hunts for the kids as well.

Check out the Bell Wildlife Specialties website here.

And if you have some time to watch some kids get their first turkeys, check out these links:

All activities are free.

"Moose sightings are always fun for people and they’re becoming more common on the Grand Mesa as the population grows," said Trina Romero, Colorado Division of Wildlife Watchable Wildlife Coordinator. "This event will teach people safe ways to see the moose and some great facts about moose in Colorado."

Grand Mesa Moose Day sponsors include the Colorado Division of Wildlife, US Forest Service, The Moose 100.7 and the Grand Mesa Scenic & Historic Byway.

The Grand Mesa is the world’s largest flattop mountain and is located east of Grand Junction. Visitors can access the Grand Mesa from Highway 65, which links Interstate 70 in De Beque Canyon with Highway 50 near Delta. The visitor center is located on top of Grand Mesa.

Moose have historically been found on the Grand Mesa in small numbers but a re-introduction effort started in 2005 by the Colorado Division of Wildlife has transplanted dozens of moose to the area. Today, biologists with the agency estimate that the now self-sustaining population numbers approximately 150 moose. The moose population is expected to grow to around 450 animals. The moose transplant and educational efforts about the moose have been funded by Colorado sportsmen through hunting license fees and by the Colorado Chapter of Safari Club International through member funding and through the organization’s annual raffle of a moose hunting license.

###

Sue Husari, (510) 817-1320, sue_husari@nps.gov

Lehnertz Named Pacific West Regional Director Will lead one of seven National Park Service regions

WASHINGTON – National Park Service (NPS) Director Jonathan Jarvis has named Christine S. Lehnertz as the Service’s Pacific West regional director, responsible for 3,000 employees and 58 national parks visited by more than

56 million people annually. She reports for duty in mid-August to the

Oakland, California, headquarters.

“I am delighted that Chris has accepted this opportunity to lead our team in the Pacific West,” Jarvis said. “She is a proven leader and an accomplished manager who brings a fresh perspective to the work we do on behalf of the American people. As deputy superintendent at Yellowstone National Park and most recently as acting associate director for cultural resources in Washington, DC, Chris has shown an uncanny ability to get to the heart of any issue, develop consensus, and get things done. She is respected by her peers and our employees and will be a great addition to our senior management team.”

“The parks in the Pacific West region are an amazing microcosm of the entire National Park System: a mix of stunning natural beauty and authentic American history,” Lehnertz said. "Throughout the region, the National Park Service’s community programs are helping towns and cities preserve their own heritage and create places where kids of all ages can get outside and be active. While the responsibilities of regional director are daunting, I am excited about taking on the challenge and with the prospect of working with the top-notch employees, partners, and volunteers who work in the Pacific West and throughout the National Park Service.”

Lehnertz replaces Jarvis as the Pacific West regional director. The position has been filled on an acting basis since Jarvis was confirmed as National Park Service director in September 2009.

Lehnertz has been the National Park Service’s acting associate director for cultural resources since April 2. She served as deputy superintendent of Yellowstone National Park since 2007 where she was responsible for all aspects of human resources, budget, and natural and cultural resource management and science programs. She also had oversight of more than 100 park concessioners with $100 million in annual gross revenue and ensured that the park’s large portfolio of construction and maintenance projects complied with the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act.

From 2004-2007, Lehnertz served as director of ecosystems protection programs in the Denver regional office of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency where she led a large multi-disciplinary staff to implement federal environmental laws including the Clean Water, Safe Drinking Water, and National Environmental Policy Acts. She managed partnerships with states and tribes, environmental and natural resource departments, and with local government and non-governmental organizations, including responsibilities for $129 million in annual grants. Her work with EPA began in 1990.

Lehnertz earned a bachelor’s degree in environmental biology from the University of Colorado in Boulder and a secondary education teacher certificate from Metropolitan State College in Denver.

Lehnertz and Shari Dagg, her partner of 16 years, plan to bring their work with golden retriever rescue to their new home in the Bay Area.

-NPS-

Note to Editors: The National Park Service’s seven regional offices provide localized policy, leadership, and technical support to parks and communities. The Pacific West Region comprises Nevada, California, Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Hawaii, portions of Arizona and Montana and the territories of Guam, American Samoa and Saipan, extending 106 degrees around the globe. The region includes 12.5 million acres of national park land, including 8.5 million acres of wilderness, 159 federally listed threatened and endangered species, 4,418 miles of designated wild and scenic rivers, nearly 100 national natural landmarks, more than 235 national historic landmarks, and more than 7,500 properties listed in the National Park Service’s National Register of Historic Places.

I’ve had the pleasure of hunting with Rich and Loren over the last several years. Loren really enjoys getting outdoors. The time he’s spent with Rich has given him the opportunity to explore the outdoors…an opportunity he wouldn’t have had without a mentor like Rich stepping up to make it happen. On a youth turkey hunt about 3 years ago, Rich and Loren spent the day in freezing cold weather (it was only 18 degrees that morning, with a 20 mph wind out of the north, blowing right in their blind). Loren got his jake just before sundown. Rich was really happy that they wouldn’t have to be going out the next morning and was looking forward to sleeping in. Loren, however, decided he hadn’t had enough and went out with another match…and spent another day in the freezing cold just for the thrill of being outdoors and watching another youngster get his opportunity for that first bird. We’ve got a link to that hunt on the Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors website.

Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors has announced the third sculpture in the Outdoor Mentor Series, a series of sculptures by noted wildlife artist John Parsons which feature a mentor and child enjoying various outdoor activities. The first sculpture in the series, “Who’s Huntin’ Who” was featured at Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Whitetails Unlimited banquets across the country this last year. “Girls’ Day Out” was only available through Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever banquets in the fall of ’09 and the spring of ’10. "Pheasant Dreams" will also only be available through Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever banquets in the fall of ’10 and the spring of ’11. The Outdoor Mentors Series is being underwritten by Federal Ammunition for Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever.

"John has been a fantastic supporter of Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors since we first began the program," stated Mike Christensen, President of Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors, Inc. "Thanks to his generosity, we have been able to raise significant funds that let us give more kids the opportunity to get outdoors."

“Pheasant Dreams” brings to life the excitement that a mentor and child share in the field. “The expression on the young man’s face really says it all,” related Christensen. “This sculpture captures the essence of a day spent pheasant hunting…birds flushing, excited dogs, and smiles all around.”

Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors is proud to have this sculpture featured at PF & QF banquets across the country. "Pheasants Forever and Quail Forever have been great partners for Pass It On. Many PF & QF chapters across the country support our efforts to get outdoors, not only financially but also with their volunteer time hosting mentor hunts and giving kids the chance to get outdoors," said Christensen. "We are also proud to have Federal Ammunition sponsor the sculpture series. This commitment shows Federal is doing more than just talking the talk…they are putting their funds where it can do the most good, giving children the opportunity to learn to hunt pheasants and quail!"

Parsons’ work is now featured in the John Parsons Signature Series in the Cabelas catalogs and stores. He was selected as Artist of the Year for the Foundation for North American Wild Sheep after only one year of sculpting. John was asked to produce artwork for the WaterWalk in <city w:st="on">
<place w:st="on">Wichita</place></city>, which now features his River Run, a sculpture of four white-tailed deer and Fighting Bucks, a deer trio locked in combat.

In November of 2008, Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors was endorsed by the National Forum on Children and Nature as one of 30 projects nationwide that creatively reconnect kids with nature, benefiting their overall health and appreciation for the great outdoors. Recognizing an urgent need to reconnect kids with nature, the Forum sought proposals from projects seeking endorsement—receiving 560 proposals. In a year-long process, advisory panels culled the best ideas for investment in children’s health through nature, tapping the tools of education, technology and a community’s built environment. As a demonstration project, Pass It On – Outdoor Mentors, Inc. serves as an innovative model for community leaders, planners, educators and others who understand the importance of reconnecting children and nature and want to take concrete steps locally.

“With the current economic situation, putting together the resources we need to expand the program is a challenge. With Pheasants Forever, Quail Forever and Federal Ammunition all stepping up to support the Outdoor Mentors Series for the coming year we’ll be able to continue to give kids a chance to experience the great outdoors we all know and love,” commented Christensen.

National Parks

WASHINGTON – “Let’s Move Outside, Junior Rangers!” is First Lady Michelle

Obama’s call to kids across the country this summer. Today, the National

Park Service kicks off Let’s Move Outside Junior Ranger in 20 parks.

National Park Junior Rangers will not only have fun and get exercise but

also receive an extra reward for working up a sweat.

Young people who complete at least one physical activity in pursuit of

their Junior Ranger badge receive a special sticker that designates them as

a Let’s Move Outside Junior Ranger. The activities range from adventures

like hiking with a ranger at Grand Canyon National Park to body surfing at

Canaveral National Seashore and canoeing at Mississippi National River and

Recreation Area.

Let’s Move Outside, led by the Department of the Interior and the

Department of Agriculture, provides tools and information to parents to

make it easy to enjoy the outdoors and be active. It is part of First Lady

Michelle Obama’s nationwide campaign to end childhood obesity within a

generation.

“The Let’s Move Outside program in our national parks provides a wonderful

way for parents to gain a passion for outdoor recreation while teaching

them about our nation’s beautiful lands, our rich cultural heritage, and

our storied past,” said Secretary of the Interior Ken Salazar.

The program engages young people from all backgrounds in a range of

educational programs and self-guided activities on America’s public lands

and waters. From hiking and biking, to swimming, paddling, and horseback

riding, these activities promise to be fun, healthy, and family friendly.

Throughout the summer, Let’s Move Outside! programs and events will be held in conjunction with schools, community groups, and other partners.

“Young people inspire us; we want to help them be vigorous and curious for

life. It starts with family fun. National parks are amazing places where

exercise is disguised as adventure, and we sneak in some learning too,”

National Park Service Director Jon Jarvis said.

Let’s Move Outside will soon be integrated into other programs, like the

Fish and Wildlife Service’s “Let’s Go Outside” initiative, which seeks to

reconnect kids and families to nature in our country’s 552 national

wildlife refuges, and the Bureau of Land Management’s “Take It Outside”

program.

Primary federal partners in this initiative are the Department of the

Interior’s National Park Service, Fish and Wildlife Service, and Bureau of

Land Management, and the Department of Agriculture’s U.S. Forest Service.

“As a department that manages one fifth of our nation’s land, the

Department of the Interior will play a vital role in Let’s Move Outside!”

said Julie Rodriguez, director of the department’s Youth Office. “Our

parks, refuges, and other public lands are waiting to be explored and

enjoyed by our nation’s young people, and we are eager to help them get

outdoors.”

By summer’s end, 50 national parks will offer Let’s Move Outside Junior

Ranger. Before heading out, visit www.letsmove.gov/outside for more

information about activities and participating parks. This website hub will

link families to the great outdoors and give tips and ideas on how to best

plan and enjoy an active visit.

DURANGO, Colo. – This is the time of year when many Colorado wildlife species are born. It’s also the time when people often see young wildlife all alone on trails, in the woods or next to roads. As tempting as it might be to "help" a young animal by picking it up or offering it food, the Colorado Division of Wildlife reminds people not to approach, touch or handle young animals.

"For some people it’s hard not to act on their human instincts to do something for an animal," said Mike Reid, district wildlife manager for the DOW in Pagosa Springs. "But the animal hasn’t been abandoned, the mother is just off feeding and sometimes leaves her young alone for several hours. An animal’s natural parents are its best parents."

Every year people pick up young animals such as deer fawns, elk calves, small mammals or birds, and then call the DOW asking what needs to be done to "save" the animal. Unfortunately, if a young animal is handled it will likely die without the nourishment its mother provides.

"If someone picks up an animal, they are essentially kidnapping it from their parents," Reid said.

Young animals are often left alone while their mother feeds to help them avoid predators and to help them learn to survive in the wild. Deer provide a good example of how wildlife adapts behaviors to help them survive. Young fawns have no scent and are born with speckled coats that provide a natural camouflage. These two factors help them avoid being found by predators. When the mother doe senses a predator might be near she moves away from her young. Many other animals use similar survival techniques.

The only time Reid suggests moving an animal is if it’s in the middle of a road. But only approach the animal to get it to move, don’t touch it. The mother will find it later.

Young birds often fall out of their nests or are pushed out by parents encouraging them to fly. Young birds should not be touched. An exception can be made if a bird can be placed quickly back into its nest – but only if the nest is easily accessible.

"If a young bird is on the ground it will quickly learn to fly," Reid said. "It’s best to let nature take its course."

People also need to keep their pets under control. Dogs – acting on their natural predator instincts – can find animals and attack them. The stress of being attacked is usually fatal for young animals unable to defend themselves.

Cats also are adept at finding eggs and young birds. Cats are pets – but they’re also predators. Many studies show that cats are damaging the songbird population. The DOW asks that people not allow their cats to roam free.

People also need to understand that not all newborn animals will survive. Mortality in wildlife is high and that is part of the natural cycle.

If you see a young animal, admire it from a distance and then move on quietly. Talk to youngsters and others about this topic who might not be familiar with wildlife.

If you are concerned about an animal don’t touch it, but make a report to your local DOW office.
