The Colorado Division of Wildlife and Zink Calls Pro Staff will hold a seminar on duck and goose calling in Johnstown, Saturday, August 7th, from 9 AM to Noon. Zink Calls Pro Staff members will cover the basics of duck and goose calling and also go over how to set up decoys.  Open to kids ages 12-18, limit 30 participants.

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. – More than 30 non-profit outdoor and sportsmen’s groups, government agencies and outdoor-related businesses from across western Colorado will sponsor the 3rd Annual Outdoor Heritage Day in Palisade on Saturday, April 24. The free event began in 2008 from the efforts of Colorado Division of Wildlife officer Frank McGee. McGee became concerned with how little time today’s youth spend outdoors and organized the first Outdoor Heritage Day event to get kids and their families outside and experiencing what Colorado can offer.
 
"There are so many different things locally that families can enjoy," said McGee. "People don’t realize what we have within just a short car ride.  We want to give families, especially kids, what they need to know to get out and experience the best parts of western Colorado."
 
Outdoor Heritage Day is free and will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, April 24 at Riverbend Park in Palisade. Activities for school age youth include a fishing clinic, hunting simulator, climbing wall, mountain biking, nature walks, a mobile shooting range and much more. Presentations by outdoor organizations will also be held throughout the day. Lunch and all activities are provided at no cost. DENVER, Colo.–The Colorado Division of Wildlife named Delaware artist Richard Clifton winner of the 2010 Colorado Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest. Clifton’s painting titled "Flying Pintails" soared above the competition as the best portrayal of the northern pintail–this year’s featured duck species.   

"Richard’s depiction of the pintail is truly exceptional and lifelike," said Kirk Davidson, Ducks Unlimited director of development and contest judge.  "I know Colorado waterfowl hunters will be proud of this painting and I’m confident it will be equally appealing to art and stamp collectors."

Each year, the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program holds a contest for original artwork featured on the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp and art prints.  The 2010 stamp and prints, available for purchase Aug. 1, will feature Clifton’s unique depiction of a pintail drake and hen touching down in a cattail marsh.

Clifton, a self-taught artist who chooses acrylics as his medium, topped a field of 43 wildlife artists in this year’s competition–the largest number of participants in the contest’s 20-year history.

"We want to congratulate Mr. Clifton for winning this year’s contest," said Brian Sullivan, DOW wetlands coordinator.  "We had a tremendous turnout and a record number of artists.  We look forward to seeing his artwork on this year’s stamp."

Clifton, who has won numerous state contests, also took top prize at the 1996 Australian Duck Stamp and 2007-08 Federal Duck Stamp competitions. In spite of his many achievements, Clifton said winning the Colorado contest was especially satisfying.  

"I have won other state contests but this is my first in Colorado, which certainly makes this one special," said Clifton. 

The Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program is designed to protect wetland habitat for waterfowl and other wetland species.  Since its inception in 1990, the program has raised $6.7 million to help preserve more than 19,500 acres of critical waterfowl habitat throughout Colorado. 

All revenue generated from the sale of stamps and art prints funds wetlands projects.  Participation among hunters and nonhunters alike is an effective way to contribute to the conservation of this precious resource.

Hunters age 16 or older are required to purchase a stamp to hunt waterfowl in Colorado.  Hunters receive an electronic stamp, validating their license, but they may also request a traditional "gum-back" stamp, featuring the artist’s rendition, at the time of purchase.  Gum-back stamps are mailed upon request, and a $2.50 fee is charged to cover stamp mailing and processing.

DENVER, Colo. –The Colorado Division of Wildlife invites sportsmen to join state legislators for a day of sporting clays and trap shooting at the 2010 Capitol Challenge Shoot-Out.

The second annual event will be held Sunday, April 25, from 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Colorado Clays in Brighton, 13600 Lanewood St.

"The Capitol Challenge Shoot-Out is a great opportunity to bring sportsmen’s groups, legislators and constituents together in a fun afternoon of trap and sporting clays shooting," said Tim Mauck, DOW legislative liaison. "It’s also a great venue to educate others about the shooting sports and the role sportsmen play in wildlife management and conservation."

The cost per participant is $40 and includes one round of trap, 10 stations of sporting clays, ammunition and a BBQ lunch.  Participants are encouraged to provide their own firearms; however, on-site shotgun rentals are available. 

Shooters of all experience levels are invited to participate, and firearms instructors will be on-hand to assist novice shooters.  

Space is limited and participants must register before Wednesday, April 21 to attend.

"The event attracted 130 participants last year, and we anticipate another great turnout this year," said Mauck. 

The shootout will benefit the Colorado Sportsmen’s Caucus, chaired by Senators Lois Tochtrop and Dan Gibbs, and Representative John Soper, who will again be among other legislators participating in this year’s event.

DENVER, Colo. –The Colorado Division of Wildlife is now accepting original artwork for the 2010 Colorado Waterfowl Stamp Art Contest.  Wildlife artists from across the nation are invited to participate in this year’s competition. 

"We are really looking forward to this year’s contest," said Brian Sullivan, Division of Wildlife wetlands coordinator.  "We had 30 artists compete in last year’s competition and hope to have even greater participation this year.  This is a tremendous opportunity for artists to showcase their work and also contribute to a cause that greatly benefits Colorado’s wetlands and waterfowl."

Celebrating its twentieth year, the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program holds an annual contest for original waterfowl artwork featured on the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp.   Cash prizes are awarded for the top three entries, but only the first-place selection is depicted on the stamp. 

The Division of Wildlife will accept entries until the Friday, March 5, 2010 contest deadline. The Colorado Waterfowl Stamp Art Committee will judge the contest, and winning entries will be announced by Monday, March 29, 2010.

The Northern pintail–a common dabbling duck that migrates to Colorado’s wetlands each fall–is this year’s featured species.   Renowned for its beautiful white and chocolate-brown plumage, the pintail derives its name from its long, pointed, "pin-like," tail feathers. A favorite among waterfowl hunters and art collectors alike, the pintail made its debut on the 1992 stamp and is the only species featured twice in the program’s 20-year history. 

"I look forward to seeing this year’s entries and selecting the artwork that best represents the Northern pintail," said Kirk Davidson, Ducks Unlimited director of development and contest judge. "Many of the state funds generated by the sale of Colorado Waterfowl Stamps have gone directly into projects along the South Platte River and other areas that provide critical resting-stop wetlands to support the pintail.  As the stamp selection committee, we attempt to select species common to Colorado and especially those, like the pintail, that depend upon our state for their life-cycle needs."    

The Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program is designed to conserve wetlands for waterfowl and other wetland-dependent wildlife.  All revenue generated from the program is used to fund wetlands projects throughout the state.  Participation in the Waterfowl Stamp program by hunters and non-hunters alike is an effective way to contribute to the conservation of this precious resource. Wetlands conservation efforts improve habitat for ducks, geese and many other species of birds, amphibians, reptiles, fish and mammals. 

Since its inception in 1990, the Colorado Waterfowl Stamp program has raised approximately $6.7 million to help restore and protect more than 19,500 acres of critical waterfowl habitat.  Additional funding from Ducks Unlimited and other partners has leveraged stamp resources to improve public waterfowl hunting opportunities and habitat throughout Colorado.  Many habitat improvement projects have been conducted on state wildlife areas.  Historically, some funds have also been used to improve important nesting areas in Canada known to produce the majority of Colorado’s migrant ducks.

All hunters age 16 or older are required to purchase a Colorado Waterfowl Stamp to hunt waterfowl in Colorado.  The stamp fee is $5 and has not increased since the program’s inception.  Hunters receive electronic stamps to validate their small game licenses, but they may also request traditional "gum-back" collector stamps, featuring the winning artwork.  Gum-back stamps are mailed to hunters upon request, and a $2.50 fee is charged to cover stamp mailing and processing.
