Mexican movie star María Félix apparently had a thing for herps and jewelry, and Cartier was only too glad to create the pieces one of the most famously beautiful, exotic and eccentric women of the day designed.

Félix kept a number of exotic pets, including crocodiles, and it’s said she brought a bowl of crocs to Cartier to help him design her crocodile necklace (shown above right) — a story that’s certainly not true, but lives on regardless.

The exhibit included the crocodile pieces as well as a snake necklace studded with the 2,473 diamonds (shown in the photo and the video below the jump). It took Cartier one year to make it.

Gunnison, Colo.–Gunnison elk hunters will see significant regulation and license changes for the 2010 big game seasons. Two groups–archery hunters and second-season rifle hunters–are affected most by changes to license allocation and should plan carefully before arriving to the Gunnison area this fall.

"We want to make sure hunters accustomed to purchasing over-the-counter elk licenses are aware of these changes well before the start of the seasons," said J Wenum, DOW area wildlife manager for Gunnison. "We don’t want hunters showing up here realizing they cannot purchase licenses or that licenses have been sold out."

Beginning this year, archery hunters can no longer purchase over-the-counter licenses for Game Management Units 54, 55 and 551. All Gunnison archery licenses are allocated by the limited drawing only for the 2010 season. Therefore, bow hunters must participate in the spring drawing and have applications submitted prior to the April 6 deadline to obtain licenses for these Units.

In addition, the Division of Wildlife is planning to reduce archery elk licenses approximately 30 to 50 percent for the upcoming season based on guidance already given by the Wildlife Commission. The 2010 license allocation is based on a three-year average of license sales during the 2007-09 seasons.

Second-season rifle hunters will also see a change in license allocation in Unit 54. Similar to previous years, hunters may purchase over-the-counter elk licenses, but licenses will be "capped" and limited in quantity. Licenses are sold on a first-come, first-served basis beginning July 13 at statewide DOW offices and license agents, and online on the DOW Web site.

Approved last year under the Five-Year Review of Big Game Season Structure, the Colorado Wildlife Commission implemented these changes to improve hunter harvest rates and to bring overpopulated Gunnison elk herds closer to objective.

During the past several years, the number of archery hunters has increased significantly in the Gunnison Basin. Increased hunting pressure has caused an early movement of elk into sanctuary areas–private ranches and wilderness areas–making animals inaccessible to both archery hunters and rifle hunters later in the season.

Wildlife managers are optimistic that reducing early season hunting pressure will improve overall hunter success and help to lower elk populations.

"Overall, these changes should provide expanded opportunities for rifle hunters to harvest antlerless elk," said Wenum.

Jeff Clark of Savannah, Georgia has been hunting and keeping and breeding snakes much of the time since his first pet snake had babies in 1964. He has kept many different species and has captive bred dozens of different ones. He has specialized in Rainbow Boas since 1989. He currently keeps 6 different subspecies of Rainbow Boas and has kept and captive bred one other Rainbow Boa subspecies. Jeff will be able to answer local specific as well as general husbandry questions.

Dave Colling started breeding Rainbow Boas back in the early 80s with the Brazilian Rainbow Boas and was instantly hooked! Specializing in the genetics and color morphs, Dave has amassed a great collection of animals that are pure stunners. Dave will be joining us to touch upon the genetics and color variations in the breeding process as well as sharing his husbandry tips.

We’ll see you there!

Thomas Edison National Historical Park

America’s Best Idea: National Park Getaway

WEST ORANGE, N.J. – When trying to convince potential patrons to fund work on the phonograph, the motion picture, and other projects, Thomas Edison welcomed them into a high-ceilinged, book-filled space with lamplight aglow on the wood of shelves and the railings of second- and third-story galleries. His visitors already respected him as the man behind practical electric lighting, and to people who had never been able to hear, on a whim, their favorite songs in the comfort of their own homes, or to watch, after the fact, an event they’d had to miss, this American wizard’s latest endeavors must have sounded like solid investments, or at least intriguing possibilities.

Today, in the form of the upcoming weekend (a long one, perhaps, if you’ll be off the Friday after Thanksgiving), you’ve got capital to spend.

Consider investing a day in Thomas Edison National Historical Park. The elegant library still greets visitors, as does the rest of the newly renovated laboratory complex and the Edison family’s nearby estate.

Short of entering Edison’s mind for a peek at his inventions in the form of ideas, you can follow them through various stages of development. The drawings in the drafting room would have functioned like DNA, providing guidance as the raw materials in Edison’s stockroom were brought together into new pieces of technology. The heavy machine shop and the precision machine shop delivered the brainchildren of Thomas Alva, whose progeny also sprung forth from the chemistry lab – a world of ovens and tubes reminiscent of the Centre Pompidou or the workshop of a techno-crazed Santa Claus and his elfin geeks; the pattern shop, whence came wooden models of Edison’s devices; and a rebuilt version of the world’s first movie studio, the Black Maria.

Before or after visiting the birthplace of the cinema and recorded sound, tour the Victorian home that Edison shared with his second wife and his flesh-and-blood children, Madeleine, Theodore, and Charles. Beginning November 27, the halls of Glenmont will be decked with poinsettias, greens, bows, wreaths, and a 10-foot tree. Holidays at Glenmont tours will be offered on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays from noon until 4 p.m., November 27, 2009, through January 3, 2010. Additional holiday tours will be offered on Wednesday and Thursday, December 30 and 31.

Don’t wait for year’s end, though. Put some of this weekend or the next into discovering the places where Thomas Edison lived and worked, and reap your returns.

###

Each week, National Park Getaways help people find new places to reconnect with nature, history, family, and friends. To see previous getaways, visit www.nps.gov/getaways.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 23, 2009

Contact: Elise Cleva 202-208-6843

Carol Shull 202-354-2234

New Lesson Plan Makes Lincoln More than an Historical Figure

WASHINGTON – Teachers who have helped their students grasp the key dates, places, events, and people in Civil War history now have the chance to flesh out one of the period’s most prominent individuals, Abraham Lincoln.

The National Trust for Historic Preservation, which administers President Lincoln’s Cottage, American University graduate students, and the National Park Service’s Teaching with Historic Places program worked together to create the new online lesson plan President Lincoln’s Cottage: A Retreat, which uses the White House resident’s second home as a foundation on which to construct a portrait of him. You can reach this lesson plan and others from http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/twhp/.

In President Lincoln’s Cottage, Lincoln appears as a husband and father as well as a national leader. Students glimpse him spending quality time with his family by taking a carriage ride with his wife and playing checkers with his son. A reading from the journal of poet Walt Whitman indicates Lincoln’s humility, for the poet observes the simplicity of the president’s clothing and carriage. While Whitman states directly that Lincoln “looks about as ordinary in attire, etc., as the commonest man,” readers learn without being told that the president, who returns Whitman’s bows as he passes the poet on his way to or from the White House, does not consider himself above common men. Just as Whitman detects an underlying sorrow in Lincoln’s gaze, students sense, in the lesson’s third reading, the president’s burdened state, as he describes hearing of a Union loss in battle and vowing to issue the Emancipation Proclamation.

In addition to readings, the lesson provides background information; a discussion prompt to draw students into the lesson; maps showing the commute between the White House and Lincoln’s retreat; historic images; and activities, such as analyzing a debated issue in current events, that make the lesson relevant to students or make real for them the challenges that confronted America’s government over the issue of emancipation. Teachers can find online not only this lesson but also guidelines for the effective use of any of the Teaching with Historic Place lesson plans.

President Lincoln’s Cottage is the 138th plan in this series, in producing which the National Park Service uses the National Register of Historic Places to enrich traditional classroom instruction in history, social studies, civics, and other subjects. The lessons are indexed by states, historic themes, time periods, learning skills, and history and social studies standards to help educators use them effectively.

The National Park Service invites teachers to work with this lesson plan focused on the importance of Abraham Lincoln’s family retreat at the Soldiers’ Home in Washington, DC. In doing so, they will expand their students’ knowledge of Lincoln’s life and improve their understanding of how he intermingled his public and private activities during the Civil War.

Hi all sorry I haven’t been around lately, been real busy. The Colorado 2009 Elk season is now under way Wahoo!!!!!!! I got to go elk hunting last weekend, the first weekend, well it was more of a scouting trip where I could carry my bow just in case. It was a pretty successful weekend. My wife Kathy and I went to the ole hunting spot Thursday evening and set up camp. On Friday morning I went scouting for those elusive elk, to my surprise I heard two bulls bugling back and forth. I also saw from my pickup, 7 cows and a bull grazing above the treeline. I decided to pull up the road a little further and check out another spot and to my surprise just down the road I saw a nice 5×5 bull watching me drive by, (just my luck the Day before the season opens). My cousin Ray joined us later Friday afternoon and we went back out scouting that evening. We saw the same cows and bull in the same spot above the treeline, so we could hardly wait until Saturday morning. Finally Saturday morning rolled around and Ray and I were getting ready to go up the valley we heard a bull bugling above the road. We proceeded to go about a mile up the valley to our favorite spot to scout from. We got there just about sun up and watched the valley for about 30 minutes. we then decided to cross the valley so we could see above the treeline on the side that we were on. We just stepped out from behind some trees to cross I spotted a cow and a calf in the meadow on the other side. So we snuck around some trees and made our way to the other side. I peeked out from behide a tree to see if the cow and calf was still there, about that time Ray saw that there was a real nice 5×5 bull there to. After watching them for awhile I decided we would circle around and try to get above them in a saddle. We finally got set up and waited. By now it was about 9:00 am when I saw some movement in the trees just a 35 yrds away, it was the cow, there was a couple of problems with that, she was down wind and the timber was to thick to get a shot off. After getting directly downwind from me she stopped in her tracks and turned around and walked off. I was hoping the cow would have walked by so Ray could get a chance, but that didn’t work either. After that we went back to camp. We went back to the same spot Saturday eve and Sunday morn, but didn’t see anything. We had to go back to work on Monday so we headed out Sunday and we will go back up after Labor Day. Sorry No Pics yet. See ya later in the month. Don’t forget to check out my Hunting 2 Fishing Store, Just click on the Logo on the left side of this page. If you like what you see in my store I would appreciate it if you would link my store to your blog. To keep the prices low I only addvertise by word of mouth.
