Frozen Mice For Snake Food
Well this post may be a little redundant for my readers, but I think it makes sense to talk about why feeder mice make sense for snake food. It is not all that uncommon that a debate may take place between snake owners on what to feed their pets. Some argue for live rodents other look to frozen mice or rats. Who is to say which is best? Apparently I am.
Now there are more then a couple things to consider when choosing the best snake food. I am talking about more than taste, but really about the health and safety of you reptile. There has been more than one occasion where the prey has turned into the predator and caused a snake some serious injuries.
Why does the debate over reptile food rage on? I think you are probably looking at two different camps, or trains of thought. First is the group that feels snakes or reptiles, and by that I mean any lizard that may eat rodents and not bugs, should behave as if they are in their natural environment.
While this sounds like a good idea, we can’t realistically produce a natural environment for our reptiles and snakes. At best, we can only produce a semi natural state for them. After all they are living in a cage in the suburbs or cities. If the snake was hunting for it’s prey in a natural habitat they would be far away from humans if possible.
Not the Natural snake food camp would have you believe that the snake can only feel like they are truly hunting prey like mice or rats if the rodents they are fed are alive. This make sense on the surface, but not so much when you dig a little deeper. Frozen Mice are a legitimate food source for you snake.
The hunting instinct does not only happen when a live mouse is put in front of them. It also happens when a pre-killed prey is used as food. Some times a snake doesn’t know the difference between pinkie mice in either state.
What matters is what the snake is really accustomed to. Have they be fed only live rodents during the time you are their owner? Do you really think that you can’t teach them to take pre-killed prey?
What about the potential health benefits of using pre-killed mice or rats vs. the live? Where do you get your supply? Is it a breeder that uses the up most care in disease and virus prevention? This should be a question that you should ask no matter what state you choose to get your feeders from.
I’m not sure about the live ones, however I do know that you can get suppliers of frozen pinkie mice to guarantee that their rodents are disease and parasite free. If your other company gets so called free range mice, can they certify the same thing? Most likely not.
It is not that hard to get your snake to start eating this different type of meal source. I mean, really, these people make it sound like it will be traumatic for their snake. If you take a little time to get them used to it, they won’t know the differences after a couple of meals. I mean a mouse is a mouse for crying out loud.
Use the proper method for thawing out your frozen mice and give it a try. If they don’t seem interested at first, use some of the tricks and tips I’ll teach you here to get them going. I assure you, making the switch to buy frozen mice is worth the effort.
